The fashion industry is gradually taking over the world, so many youths in Nigeria have the passion for fashion designing, it takes so much more than passion to run a fashion business. In order to start up a fashion brand, you must be Consistent, Persistent, Hardworking, Prayerful and Patient. Starting up a fashion business is not an easy task but if you have a great deal of passion for it, the difficulties you will face won’t discourage you. So, I will be giving valuable tips on starting a fashion brand, tips I used, tips I learnt, tips I failed to apply in the very beginning, general tips in starting a fashion brand. I am sure you are excited to know the tips, I will be writing on five tips

TIP 1 : CRITICAL RESEARCH

According to Zora Neale Hurston, Research is formalized curiosity, it is poking and prying with a purpose.   Do a critical research on the aspect of fashion you want to specialize in, try to be the very best when you start. Be precise on the aspect, for instance, you have a passion for womenswear, focus solely on that when you start, if possible get a fashion degree. While carrying out your research, an internship in an established fashion company can be very helpful. New knowledge is essential when starting, so make your research.

TIP 2 : GET A MENTOR

It is very important to have a mentor, have a mentor who you can look up to while starting up your brand. A mentor is a wise and trusted counselor or teacher, so when you decide to pick a mentor, make sure the person will have time for you, time to advice you. According to a popular saying by Benjamin Franklin “Tell me and I forgot, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn.

TIP 3 : WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN

In starting any business, a business plan is very essential. A business plan is a guide for your business, that outlines goals and details how you plan to achieve those goals. A business plan must contain the following: the executive summary, the company description, market analysis, organization and management, product or service line, marketing and sales… basically make your business plan detailed.

TIP 4 : CAPITAL

Work with the capital you have, don’t make a budget above your capital. I believe in starting small. Even in the Bible, it is stated “do not despise the days of humble beginnings” (Zechariah 4:10). A fashion business is a high intensive business but if you have little you can start but make sure you deliver the best quality you can deliver and with time everything will fall in place. Be patient and believe with what you have you can start.

TIP 5 : BE UNIQUE

Fashion is a vast field, so every piece you make should stand out in one way, be creative with every design, when making a collection, make unique designs and when showcasing your designs, stand out. Fashion is art, an art is expression. Express yourself through your art, fashion.

There are so many tips but I feel the few ones in this article will go a long way for anyone looking forward to starting a fashion business. There is no time to waste, start working on your dreams. The biggest adventure you can take is live the life of your dreams (Oprah Winfrey).
